Dear Mr. O' Leary:

Mr. Donald J. Skovholt's letter of January 17, 1972, nquested that we submit a reanalysis of the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) pt -formance for the Big Rock Point Plant by July 1,1972. The ant'ysis fcr the Design Basis Accident (DBA) was submitted on May 18, 1972, <hich demonstrated that, although the present Type F fuel exceeds the Interim Acceptance Criteria, future fuel modifications are available which will allow the fuel to meet the criteria.

Preliminary investigation of the small-break accident indicates that the interim criteria may not be met with the present low-pressure spray equipment. The design analysis which must be conducted on the various fuel designs and methods available to improve the Big Rock Point ECCS performance is under way; however, the performance information on the system will not be available until about September 1,1972. Accord-ingly, we request a delay until September 1,1972, for submittal of the information requested above.

This delay, however, will not alter the July 1, 1974, schedule for affecting small-break ECCS improvements, if any are necessary, in the Big Rock Point Plant system.

Yours very truly, f
