SUBJECT:

UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS On August 23,1993, at approximately 9:00 a.m., the licensee identified a small steam leak from the t

first stage high pressure turbine extraction steam line. The steam leak was located in the turbine building and did not affect any adjacent equipment in the area. Once the lagging was removed, the leak was subsequently found to be from a crack on a non-safety grade 14" Cmsby gate valve (MS-V-560) body. The licensee determined that the valve body crack was appmximately 1/2 inch long. At approximately 10:30 a.m., the licensee decided to shutdown the unit to Mode 2 to isolate and initiate repairs to valve MS-V-560. As of 1:00 p.m., the unit was at 45% mted thermal power. The licensee replaced this extraction steam valve with a refurbished valve during the recent refueling outage (May-July,1993).

The outage is expected to last four days. Major outage activities include repairs to valve MS-V-560 and other miscellaneous valve packing leaks-The licensee notified the NRC Operations Center at 12:17 p m. The licensee did not issue a press release, however, they responded to media inquiries. The Region I Public Affairs Office is prepared to respond to media inquiries. The State of Connecticut has been notified.

This notification is current as of 3:00 p.m. on August 23,1993.
