October 27, 1982 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PN0-II-82-116 This-preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

LINEAR INDICATIONS IN RHR PIPE During required, augmented, ultrasonic inspection of service sensitive piping as defined by NUREG-0313, Revision 1, the licensee identified linear indications in a circumferential weld zone in the Residual Heat Removal (RHR) suction line off of the recirculation loop. The line is 20 inch diameter, schedule 80, stainless steel.

The licensee is evaluating the information and continuing planned inspections of other welds in the line prior to determination of appropriate corrective action.

j A Region II specialist will be at the site on November 1 to review results of the tests and the adequacy of planned corrective action.

Unit 1 is currently shut down for refueling.

During this outage, the licensee will also conduct similar ultrasonic examinations of the recirculation loop in accordance with IE Bulletin 82-03.

Media interest is not expected. Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a news release.

The State of Georgia has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the license at 1 p.m. (EDT) on October 26.
