SUBJECT:
CANCELLATION OF UNIT Virginia Electric and Power Company announced today that it is cancelling construction of North Anna Unit 3.
In a statement to the press, the company cited " huge increases in estimated costs."
The licensee announced in 1980 that it was cancelling the planned North Anna Unit 4, but would complete Unit 3.
m North Anna Unit 3 is 8 percent complete. VEPCO's operating plants are North Anna Units 1 and 2 and Surry Units 1 and 2.
Media interest has occurred because the announcement was made at a press conference.
The NRC does not plan a news release.
The Comonwealth of Virginia has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) was informed of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 1:15 p.m. today.
