SECURITY FORCE TERMINATIONS AT SURRY AND RESULTANT f1EDIA ATTENTION This PN updates PN-81-114, issued on December 9,1981.
Some members of the Surry plant security force who were dismissed after an investigation into allegations regarding illegal drug use off site have made allegations to a Newport News, Virginia, newspaper that they were unfairly treated by VEPCO.
The newspaper story resulting from these complaints has been picked up by wire services, which are circulating it within Virginia.
Region II was informed of the VEPC0 investigation at the outset and was kept updated on the investigation and related matters by the licensee.
In addition, a Region II investigator reviewed the VEPC0 investigation and determined that it was comprehensive.
Plant security continues to be adequate and to meet regulatory requirements, based on resident inspector observations and inspections by security specialists from Region II.
Region II will evaluate any new infomation that may be received to determine if further action by the NRC is appropriate.
Both VEPC0 and NRC, Region II, are responding to media inquiries.
The NRC does not plan to issue a news release.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed.
The Information Assessment Team has been notified by Region II.
