REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI) REGARDING TESTING AND INSTALLATION OF THERM 0-LAG FIRE BARRIERS (TAC NOS. M75910 and M75911)

Awaiting Information As a result of ongo.ing review activities associated with Thermo-Lag raceway fire barriers, some concerns were identified regarding the installation and fire resistive qualification testing of these barriers at Susquehanna Electric Steam Station Unit 1.
During our review of the subject TACs we became aware that Thermo Lag fire barriers were used to provide the one and three hour barriers for areas which the licensee was requesting exemptions. We are separating these issues from the other aspects of the licensee's request.
In order to resolve these concerns, we have enclosed a request for additional information relating to the Thermo-Lag fire barrier material.
Please forward this request for additional information to the licensee 'for action.

i Enclosure REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON SUSQUEHANNA ELECTRIC STEAM STATION UNIT 1 THERM 0-LAG FIRE BARRIERS Currently, the NRC is concerned with the installation and qualification testing of Thermo-Lag raceway fire barriers installed to meet the requirements-of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50. We understand that such barriers are used in areas for which you have requested exemptions from the requirements of 10CFR50, Appendix R (submittal dated December 29, 1989, Revision 4 of Fire Protection Review Report).
Therefore, the staff is requesting additional information concerning the design and installation of the raceway fire barriers used by PP&L.
Specifically the staff is requesting the following information relating to the barriers surrounding or contained in the areas for which you requested exemptions.
- 1) Qualification fire test reports for Thermo-Lag fire barriers.
2)
"As-Built" design and installation details of various 1-hour and 3-hour assemblies.
3)
Installation procedures used for Thermo-Lag fire barriers.
- 4) Any engineering analysis which can support the performance of. these fire barriers.
