HANDGUN FOUND IN STATE INSPECTOR'S BELONGINGS DURING PLANT j
ENTRY On December 11, 1997. during an routine security check of the belongings of an Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety (IDNS) resident inspector entering the plant site, an unloaded handgun and ammunition was found in the inspector's brief case. IDNS has state resident inspectors at all nuclear power plants in Illinois.
The licensee followed its security procedures and temporarily suspended the inspector's plant access, conducted an interview to determine intent, and notified local police. The licensee's initial investigation revealed no malevolent intent on the part of the inspector. The inspector stated that he had put.the gun in his brief case while offsite and failed to remove it when he arrived at the LaSalle Station.
IDNS has placed the inspector on administrative leave and asked the Illinois State Police to perform an investigation on its behalf. The state investigation is ongoing.
The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with IDNS and with the licensee.
