NRC Seeking Public Comment on Environmental Review of Dresden Subsequent License Renewal Application

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comment on the environmental topics the agency should consider in reviewing an application requesting an additional 20 years of operation for both reactors at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station in Morris, Illinois.

Constellation Energy Generation filed the application on April 17, seeking to renew the licenses from 60 to 80 years. Dresdens two boiling-water reactors are approximately 23 miles southwest of Joliet, Illinois. Dresden Unit 2 is currently licensed to operate through Dec. 22, 2029, and Unit 3 through Jan. 12, 2031.

NRC staff members will conduct two webinars Aug. 20 to gather public comment. The firstwill be from noon-2 p.m. Central t ime; the secondwill be f rom 5-7 p.m. Central time. At both sessions the staff will describe the environmental review process and accept comments from the public about the potential scope of that review. The webinars, as outlined in a Federal Register notice, are one method for filing comments on the environmental review before the Sept. 4 deadline. Comments can also be submitted via regulations.gov under Docket ID NRC-2024-0080, via email to DresdenEnvironmental@nrc.gov, or by mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop TWFN-7-A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001.

Copies of the Dresden subsequent license renewal application will be available at the Morris Area Public Library, 604 Liberty St. in Morris; and the Coal City Public Library District, 85 North Garfield St. in Coal City, Illinois. More information about subsequent license renewal is available on the NRC website.
