September 5, 2023 Andrea Ferkile, Director for the Office of Nonproliferation Office of Nonproliferation and Arms Control National Nuclear Security Administration U.S. Department of Energy 1000 Independence Avenue, S.W.
Washington, D.C. 20585
Dear Dir. Ferkile:
Enclosed is an application accepted by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on, August 21, 2023, from Southern Ionics Minerals LLC requesting amendment No. 01 to its existing license XSOU8856. This license presently authorizes the export of 100,000 kilograms (kgs) of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) and 67,615 kgs of uranium containing up to 270 kgs U-235.
The material will be exported to Urenco Chemplants, United Kingdom (UK) for chemical conversion to uranium oxide (U3O8). The U3O8 will then be returned to the U.S. and disposed of in the Department of Energys Federal Waste Facility located at Waste Control Specialists in Andrews, TX.
The purpose of the amendment is to request that the current expiration date of 9/30/2023 be changed to 9/30/2024.
There are no changes to the terms and conditions of the existing license being requested.
Therefore, our office is processing this as a minor amendment, and if no comments are received from the public within the 30-day comment period, and it is determined that applicable legal requirements are satisfied, the NRC will issue the license.
Sincerely, 9/5/2023 X Peter J. Habighorst Peter J. Habighorst Signed by: Peter J. Habighorst Peter J. Habighorst, Chief Export Controls and Nonproliferation Branch Office of International Programs
