COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION

' DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 RICHMOND INSERT TESTING

Dear Mr. Collins:

Comanche Peak Project is undertaking a test program to provide additional data on the perfonnance of Richmond Inserts. This letter provides a general outline of the physical testing to be performed at Comanche Peak on 1 1/2" diameter Richmond Type EC-6W inserts for shear strength. Generally the test will be performed in accordance with ASTM E-488-76. Nine specimens will be tested by the following methods:

A) Three specimens will be tested with the shear load plate attached directly to the insert by an ASTM A-490 bolt.

B) Three specimens will be tested with the shear load plate separated from the insert by a one inch shim plate and employing an ASTM A-490 bolt.

C) Three specimens will be tested with the shear load plate l separated from the insert by a one inch shim plate and employing an ASTM A-307 bolt.

These tests will be performed on inserts which have been placed l

in a concrete test slab. Appropriate quality control records are l being maintained on the concrete, which was placed on February 11, l 1983. The tests are anticipated to be run on the week of March 21, 1983.

If you have any further questions, please contact Mr. R. M. Kissinger l
