South Haven, MI, 49090 Email: shawn15888@gmail.com Phone: 269-377-8134 General Comment It appears additional consideration to keeping Palisades in operation have been introduced. Governor Whitmer and Secretary Granholm have made public statements in support of "dong everything they can" to keep Palisades in operation. The owner, Holtec is requesting a second level of consideration for federal funding to keep the plant in operation. And the local community seems supportive of the plant because it is safe and provides an economic benefit to the region. I've lived in Southwest Michigan all of my life.
My brother raised his family in South Haven, and I spend the summers there, riding to Van Buren State Park at least three times every week in the summer. My friends swam in the warm water exhaust of Palisades until that was disallowed after 9-11. The area around the plant is quiet, pristine, and the fishing in that area of Lake Michigan is ideal. With all the climate change, technical issues, risk, and historical data in conideration, it just doesn't make sense to shut down an existing nuclear plant anywhere. The US seems on track to follow California, Germany, and Great Britan down a path of energy shortage, increased expense, and higher CO2 and methane emissions by shutting down nuclear power plants. The area around Palisades, like Diablo Canyon are still pristine in a large part because those plants are there.
We know fission pretty well now, and the world is moving to the more dense nuclear fuels. Let's not take a step backwards here. Approve the funding for Palisades, let the owner upgrade the plant according to the specs enforced by NRC, and let's get on with the common sense of producing clean power.
