Inspection No.87-011 l On May 6, 1987, Ms. J. A. Joustra of this office conducted a special safety inspection at the above address in order to obtain information relating to a static eliminator containing approximately 10 millicuries of polonium-210 that was reported missing by you on May 4, 1987. The inspection was an examination of activities as they relate to radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's regulations. The inspection consisted of observations by the inspector, interviews with personnel, and an examination of representative records. The findings of the inspection were discussed with you at the con-clusion of the inspection.

Based on the results of this inspection, it appears that one of your activities was not conducted in full compliance with NRC requirements, as set forth in The Notice of Violation enclosed herewith as Appendix A. This violation has been categorized by severity level in accordance with the " General Statement of Policy and Procedure for NRC Enforcement Actions," 10 CFR Part 2, Appendix C (Enforcement Policy). This Notice is sent to you pursuant to the provisions of Section 2.201 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations. However, since we are in receipt of your May 20, 1987 letter in which you have addressed the item identified in the enclosed Appendix A, and since your corrective actions appear adequate to prevent recurrence of this item, you are not required to respond to this letter. We will review your corrective actions during a future inspection.

In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2, i Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter and your May 20, 1987, letter will be placed in the Public Document Room.
