Subject:

PRELIMINARY INSERVICE INSPECTION FINDINGS DURING REFUELING OUTAGE An IE inspector at the Pilgrim I site informed the Region I office that preliminary inservice inspection (ISI) findings had identified an indication in the "A" recirculation loop's 4 inch bypass pipe line.

ISI is also being conducted, using improved UT inspection apparatus, to reinspect a manufacturing flaw in one of the 12-inch recirculation system inlet nozzles to the reactor pressure vessel. This nozzle flaw was previously evaluated by NRR and found to be acceptable in early 1974. Preliminary ISI results indicate the flaw to be larger in size than that observed previously when less sophisticated equipment was employed.

Region I has dispatched a specialist in UT to the site to observe the work in progress. '

Media interest is expected because of the Pilgrim 2 hearings. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been and is being kept informed. A press release is not planned. (
