The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that ic known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Iowa Electric Light and Power Company, Duane Arnold Energy Center (DN 50-331), Palo, Iowa Cubject: SMALL DIESEL GENERATOR FIRE During the conduct of a routine monthly diesel generator surveillance test on November 4,1976, a fuel oil leak developed due to a cracked fitting in the fuel line. As a result, fuel oil was sprayed on the hot exhaust manifold and ignited. The engine was immediately shut down and the fire extinguished by the test operator stationed at the engine.

Outside assistance to extinguish the fire was not necessary, and there was no apparent damage to the engine. The fuel line crack is suspected to have been caused by vibration fatigue.

The fittings were checked on the second diesel generator and no evidence of cracking was detected. Since the second diesel generator unit test- J ed satisfactorily, reactor operations are continuing. l An IE:III inspector was onsite at the time of the incident.
