FACILITY: Braidwood Station, Unit 2 SUBJFCT: SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT, LICENSE AMENDMENT APPLICATION DATED DECEMBER 4, 1987, RE USE OF POST ACCIDENT FISSION DETECTORS

1. Backoround On December 4,1987, CECO submitted an application #or license amendment requesting the receipt, possession, installation, ar,d use of two post accident fission detectors. At the present time, the fission detectors are under the control of the Braidwood Unit 1 Operatino License NPF-72. To authorize the receipt, possession, installation, and use of the post accident fission detectors, the staff recommends the following conditiens:

6.C. Uranium enriched to any enrichnent in the U-235 isotope 7.C. Contained in sealed neutron detectors 8.C. 24 g U-235

11. Discussion A. Radiation Safety The licensee has not committed to leak testing the requested uranium sealed sources (fission detectors). Accordingly, the staff recommends revising Condition No. 14 to cover any sealed sources in the license. Revised License Condition No. 14 shall read as follows:
14. The licensee shall comply with the provisions of Annex A, " License Condition for Leak Testing of Sealed Sources."

B. Environmental This licensing action is in accordance with 10 CFR 51.22(c)(10) and therefore, neither an Environmental Impact Statement nor an Environmental Assessment is warranted.
