RESPONSE TO MAY 28, 1997 LETTER REQUESTING COMMENT PERIOD EXTENSION

Dear Mr. Modeen:

I am responding to your letter of May 28, 1997, to Mr. Gary Holahan, Director, Division of Systems Safety and Analysis, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, in which you requested an extension of the comment period from 30 days to 60 days (June 19, 1997 to July 19, 1997) on the proposed supplement to NRC Bulletin 96-01, " Control Rod Insertion Problems." Although there have been some changes, in general, the proposed Bulletin Supplement contains information that has been presented and discussed with the industry for several months. Therefore, we do not wish to extend the official comment period. However, if we receive your comments within 60 days (by July 19, 1997) we will consider them to the extent possible.

Sincerely, ,
