NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AVAILABILITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR DECONTAMINATION OF INTERMEDIATE LEVEL RADIDACTIVE WASTE WATER AT THREE MILE ISLAND UNIT NO. 2 Pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations in 10 CFR Part 51, notice is hereby given that an Environmental Assessment and Negative Declaration prepared by the Commission's Of fice of Nuclear Reactor Regula tion related to the decontamina-tion of intermediate level radioactive waste water at the Three Mile Island Unit No. 2 nuclear power plant is available for comment.

Metropolitan Edison Company, the licensee for Three Mile Island Unit No.

2, proposes to use an EPICOR-II ion exchange decontamination system to decon-taminate the intermediate level radioactive waste water which has been held in tanks at Three Mile Island since .he accident at that facility o<n March 28, 1979.

The Assessment considers the eavironmental impacts resultirw; frorm use of EPICOR.

II including risks from possib',e accidents, and it also considers alternatives to use of EPICOR. The Assestnent and the accompanying Negative Declaration conclude that the environmental impacts of use of EPICOR-II will not signifi-cantly affect the environment, ano therefore that preparatton of an Environmental Impact Statement is not required.

The Assessment does not consider ultimate disposal of the decontaminated waste water because use of EPICOR-II will not foreclose any op+ ions for such j l ultimate disposal'and because disposal will be the subject of a subseouent l Assessment. Furthermore, the Assessment does not consider the decontamination l

l or disposal of the high-level contaminated waste water at Three Mile Island.

Copies of the Assessment have been circulated for comment to other federal agencies, to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to local and municipal governments in the Three Mile Island area. Any comments or suggestions on the Assessment should be filed within 30 days from publication of this flotice by addressing a copy to the Secretary of the Commission, U.S. Nuclear Pegula tory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555, Attention: Docketing and Service Branch. l comments received by the Commission will be made available for public inspection in the Commission's Public Occument Poem. Af ter analysis of the comments. the staff will brief the Commission and the Commission will then decide whether to l adopt the staff recommendation.
