Rodlotion Effects Reactor, Docket 50-172 .
Gentlemen:
The Lockheed-Georglo Company is in the process of suspending operations of its Nuclear Laborofory of Dawsonville, Georglo. Further operation of the Rodlotion Effects Reactor (RER) of this laboratory is not planned. The fuel elements have been unlooded from the reactor and are stored in the RER storoge pool in occordance with current procedures.
The Lockheed-Georgio Company is preparing plans for ' ommissiontng the RER. This letter requests on omendment to Focility License R-86 to authorize Lockheed to c,wn but not operate the RER, This amendment is requested for o -
period of one year from the dote of this letter.
A set of proposed technical specifications covering Lockheed activitte with the respect to the reactor during this period is ottoched. Lockheed is presently studylng the various alternatives for decommissioning the reactor, and expects to opply for a license within the next 6 months to decommluton the RER. During this period, proposed technical specificottons for decom- ,
minioning will be developed and will be submitted with the opplicotton for the decommissioning license.
