NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 61 Forsyth Street SW, Atlanta GA 30303 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-09-008 February 10, 2009 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 562-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 562-4416 NRC ASSIGNS NEW SENIOR RESIDENT INSPECTOR TO VOGTLE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in the NRCs Region II office in Atlanta have selected Mike Cain as the new senior resident inspector at the Vogtle nuclear power plant, located near Waynesboro in east Ga. He joins NRC Resident Inspector Tim Chandler and Site Secretary Marilyn Evans at the plant, which is operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company.

Cain joined the NRC as a resident inspector at the Summer nuclear plant in Jenkinsville, S.C., in 2004. He later held the positions of senior reactor inspector and senior construction inspector in the Region II office. Prior to joining the NRC, Cain held various supervisory and management positions for 10 years with Progress Energys Robinson nuclear plant in Hartsville, S.C.. He also served in the U.S. Navys nuclear submarine and surface fleet for fifteen years, and is currently a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Cain holds a bachelors degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He is married to the former Marlene Hill of Bishopville, S.C. and they have five children.

Mike Cain has the experience and commitment to safety to carry out the NRC mission of protecting people and the environment, and to help ensure the safe operation of the Vogtle plant, said NRC Region II Administrator Luis Reyes.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear plant has at least two NRC resident inspectors. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can be assigned to any one site for up to seven years.
