.s LICENSE NO. DPR-62 REQUEST FOR LICENSE AMENDMENT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - CONTAINMENT OXYGEN CONCENTRATION

Dear Mr. Ippolito:

This letter is to confirm information provided to NRC in a June 12, 1981 conference call regarding the operational status of Brunswick Unit No. 2 and the existing situation relative to inerting contairsent.

(1) Brunswick-2 reached 15% power level at 10:45 p.m. on June 11, 1981. Technical Specifications require containment to be inerted by 10:45 p.m. on June 12.

(2) Good progress has been made in installing the replace-ment oil-fired boiler which will be used to provide steam to vaporize nitrogen to inert containment. We expect to be able to light-off this boiler by about 1:00 p.m. on June 12, 1981.

(3) If boiler operation is satisfactory, inerting contain-ment would take approximately 10 - 12 hours1.388889e-4 days
0.00333 hours
1.984127e-5 weeks
4.566e-6 months
. This is beyond the Technical Specification 6eadline cf 10:45 p.m. on June 12, 1981.

Mr. T.-A. Ippolito - 2- June 12, 1981 !

(4) As stated in the conference call, Carolina Power &

Light Company (CP&L) is contident that inerting can be completed in a shorter time than requested in our June 11, 1981 submittal. CP&L agreed to reduce the requested exemption to 72 hours8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
.

(5) With regard to fire protection considerations for operating in a deinerted condition, the plant fire brigade will be alerted to the degraded fire pro-tection cordition in containment.

Thank you for your effsres in this matter.

Yours very truly, CL) - -
