Reactor Oversight Process Enhancement Emergency Preparedness

Background

The NRCs Emergency Preparedness (EP) requirements ensure that nuclear power plant operators can take adequate actions to protect public health and safety in the event of a reactor emergency. The staffs review of existing EP Oversight highlighted several opportunities to enhance the program.

Changes Recommended by Staff The staff has provided several significant changes to the Commission for consideration and direction. These proposed changes would maintain current inspections while focusing on findings within the EP Cornerstone related to the most risk-significant regulatory planning standards. Other enhancements deal with knowledge management, effective use of operational experience, and EP Inspector training.

Recommendation that Require Additional Evaluation Nuclear Energy Institute recommendation related to the consideration of the other Reactor Safety Cornerstones when determining the signi"cance of EP "ndings, is under review to generate options for consideration.
