Reactor Oversight Process Enhancement 90%

Performance Indicators

Background

The NRC staff are following up on ROP enhancement recommendations related to statistical indicators of nuclear power plant performance. The staffs holistic review of all ROP performance indicators will run through 2020, examining whether changes are warranted.

Changes Being Considered by NRC Staff Mitigating Systems Performance Index (MSPI)

A Nuclear Energy Institute recommendation suggests revising or replacing performance indicators that cover systems for reducing the impact of potential reactor incidents. The NRC staff is waiting to review a formal industry proposal to replace the MSPI; decisions in this area are yet to come.

Emergency Preparedness (EP) Performance Indicators:

The NRC staff is developing enhanced monitoring of nuclear power plants maintenance of emergency response facilities, including alert siren operability. The enhancements would maintain effective EP programs while allowing more efficient use of NRC and plant resources, possibly including plants reviewing their programs every two years.

Holistic Review of Performance Indicators Additional changes may be considered based on the results of the holistic review of performance indicators. Any changes would be pursued following existing procedures in the Performance Indicator Program.

Next Steps Staff will continue to seek comment on the proposed PI program changes. Stay tuned to the NRCs public meeting announcements for more details.
