NRC STAFF TO MEET WITH VOGTLE NUCLEAR PLANT OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS NUCLEAR PLANT LICENSE RENEWAL INSPECTION Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have scheduled a meeting with Southern Nuclear Operating Company on June 6, 2008, in Waynesboro, Ga., to discuss the results of the agency's inspection of the Vogtle nuclear power plant's license renewal program.

The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Augusta Technical College, 216 Highway 24 South, in Waynesboro. It will be open to public observation, and NRC offici als will be available prior to the close of the meeting to answer questions from interested observers. A report on the inspection will be issued approximately 45 days after the meeting and will be available to the

public.

The inspection, which began May 19 and ends June 6, is conducted to verify that programs are in place to manage the material condition of the plant's systems, structures and components during 20 additional years of operatio n should the NRC approve the license renewal application.

Company officials submitted an application to the NRC to renew the licenses for the two Vogtle units on June 27, 2007. That application, if approved, would extend the expiration date of the operating license for Unit 1 from its current expiration date in 2027 to 2047 and Unit 2 from its current expiration date of 2029 until 2049.
