Abnorcal Occurrence 475-09:

Pinhole leak in cap attached to Magnetic Control Rod Drive Rod Travel Housing K-7

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

'ihie is to confirn ny phone call to Mr. Paul Kellcgg yesterday to report

~ Abnormal Occurrence 475-09 at Cinna Station.*

At the beginning of the refueling shutdewn that started on March 10, 1975,.

there was en indication of a leak frco K-7 centrol rod housing cap.

This was found by visual inspection. A dye penetrant check of the area did not shcv any lenk.

The head was recoved fron the reaccor and placed on the miwd ou the up.u m. iu ;. fisur uf the evacuit.:uat.

  • t u.s not possible to do any further checking of the area.

On April 10, 1975, with the head back on the reactor, the K-7 control rod cap was inspected further. The area was cledned with a file and polished with e.nery cloth. Another dye penetrant examinatien of the area shcued a pinhole leak approxinately 1/4" to 3/S" above the seal weld that seals the screwed cap to the Rod Travel llousing.

The PORC net and recoccended that a new cap be purchased and installed.

If a ncv cap is not availabic in time for plant startup, a weld repair procedure will be developed to repair the leak.
