NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.09-015 January 22, 2009 NRC LICENSING BOARD TO DISCUSS VOGTLE NUCLEAR PLANT COMBINED LICENSE, EARLY SITE PERMIT APPLICATIONS ON JAN. 28 The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB), an independent judicial arm of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, will hold consecutive prehearing conferences on Jan. 28, concerning applications for a Combined License (COL) and Early Site Permit (ESP) for the Vogtle site near Waynesboro, Ga.

The Board will hear presentations and arguments, starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, regarding the relationship between Southern Nuclears Vogtle COL application and an application to amend the AP1000 reactor design previously certified by the NRC, as well as the availability of low-level radioactive waste storage at the Vogtle facility. Following that discussion, the Board will discuss scheduling and administrative matters regarding the upcoming hearing in March on the Vogtle ESP.

The proceeding will be videoconferenced between the ASLB Hearing Facility, Room T-3B45 in NRC headquarters at 11545 Rockville Pike in Rockville, Md.; and the NRC Region II offices, Room 24T20 in the Sam Nunn Federal Building, 61 Forsyth St. S.W. in Atlanta. The public may observe the prehearing conferences at either location. The ASLB strongly advises those attending the prehearing conference to arrive early to allow time for security screening.

Only orderly conduct will be tolerated.
