This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs. T. J. Kozak

and C. R. Cox of this office on November 29 through December 3,1993.

The

inspection included a review of authorized activities for your Duane Arnold

Energy Center. At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were

discussed with those members of your staff identified in the enclosed report.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within

these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures

and representative records, interviews with personnel, and observations of

activities in progress.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this

inspection.

Improvements in foreign material exclusion control in the spent fuel pool area

during the cleanup project were noted during this inspection.

In addition,

radiological performance during the recently completed refueling outage was

much improved from previous outages. We encourage you to ensure your

improvement in these areas is sustained.
