Facility                                         Licensee Emeraency Classification Michrel Schiavone & Sons, Inc.                     Notification of Unusual Event Michtel Schiavone & Sons, Inc.                     Alert 234 Universal Drive                               Site Area Emergency North Haven, Connecticut 06473-3630               General Emergency Dockets: 99990001 License No: NA                 X Not Applicable Subjcct:     RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL FOUND IN A SCRAP YARD On October 2, 1998 at about 4:00 p.m., a representative from the State of Conn:cticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) contacted NRC t ff concerning radioactive material found in a scrap yard on October 2, 1998 about 9:50 a.m. The CTDEP representative described the scrap as a ctral tube about two feet long and a quarter of an inch in diameter which wza crumpled. The radioactive source was located about 2 inches from one end of the steel tube. A radiation exposure level of 3.5 millirem per hour was measured using an ion chamber. A scrap shipment had been sent from the Connecticut scrap dealer to Michigan, where it was rejected when rndioactive material was detected in the shipment and the shipment was rcturned to the scrap dealer. The scrap dealer is maintaining security of the radioactive material by keeping it in a locked mini-bunker. The CTDEP representative stated that they are going to obtain the radioactive           l material and do further tests in order to identify the type of rrdioactive material.
