SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 SEISMIC AIR GAP DESIGN ADEQUACY SDAR: CP-86-55 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On August 14, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. I.~Barnes of a eficiency involving the seismic air gap design adequacy between the Auxiliary Building and Units 1 and 2 Containment Buildings.

This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provision of 10CFR50.55(e). Our last interim report was logged TXX-5011, dated September 12, 1986.

The specific deficiency involved recent calculations which indicated that a separation gap dimension should be greater than the existing design dimension durir.g extreme high temperature conditions. Using more realistic data, this calculation was refined to demonstrate that the present gap is acceptable.

Review and evaluation of the refined calculations are scheduled for completion by February 20, 1987.

We anticipate submitting our next report no later than March 13,-1987.

Very truly yours, Wb W. ' G'."Counsil JCH/mlh
