50-445 AND 50-446 SEISMIC AIR GAP DESIGN ADEQUACY SDAR: CP-86-55 (INTERIM REPORT)
Dear Mr. Johnson:
On August 14, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. I. Barnes of a deficiency involving the seismic air gap design adequacy between the Auxiliary Building and Units 1 and 2 Containment Buildings. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provision of 10CFR50.55(e).
The specific deficiency involved recent calculations which indicate that a separation gap dimension should be greater than the existing design dimension during extreme high temperature conditions.
Our review has indicated this calculation used conservative assumptions. More recent calculations (based upon more realistic data) demonstrate the present design gap is acceptable. These calculations are presently being reviewed by third party reviewers. This review.is currently scheduled for completion by October 31, 1986.
We are continuing our evaluation and anticipate submitting our next report by November 21, 1986.
Very truly yours,
