LEAK FROM B0 RATED WATER STORAGE TANK (BWST)

At 4 :00 PM on January 13, 1982, an NRC Resident Radiaticn Specialist noted, through routine review of licensee's logs, that valve DHIV 28 (instrument pipe and valve to

BWST sample point) of the BWST had leaked.

The leak rate was estimated to have been approximately 1 liter / minute; as much as 180 liters could have spilled to the ground at one side of the tank.

Initial sample of the liquid indicated the following activity:

137 s - 3.7 E-4 uC1/ml C

134 s - 1.1 E-4 uCi/ml C

60 o - 1.3 E-5 uCi/ml C

The leak is believed to have been caused by the recent extreme cold weather which froze a small pipe (3/8 inch) and subsequently cracked a pipe fitting.

The leak began after a backup heat tracing line was put in service at about 10:00 AM'on 1/13/82.

Upon detection, the licensee immediately isolated the leak.
