Dear Sir:

Subject:

Reactor Protection System (RPS) Power Supply In References (2) and (3) Vermont Yankee committed to perform increased' surveillance and additional testing of the RPS Motar-Generator sets.

It was, and still is, our opinion that these changes, coupled with minor equipment-modifications, would satisfy the concerns regarding operability of the RPS Motor-Generator Sets.

However, Reference (4) states that the use of alarms or shift surveillance is only acceptable as an interim measure and not-adequate for the long-term solution.

For the long-term solution, modifications should be made to provide fully redundant Class IE protecti'on at the interface of the non-Class 1E power supplies and the RPS.

Consequently, as required by Reference'(4), Vermont Yankee proposes to install the required Class _-1E protective circuitry by the end of the next

refueling outage.

This commitment ~is made assuming that no unforeseen difficulties will be encountered in procuring the necessary equipment. Design information and proposed Technical Specifications for the-modified protective system will be submitted prior-to start up.

The protective circuitry packages we plan to use are similar to those which were found acceptable in References (4) and (5)..
