On January 30, at 12:30 pm, the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant declared an Unusual Event due to the loss of offsite land-line communications. Cellular phones and satellite phones were available throughout the event. The cause of the loss of communications was a downed tree impacting a power transmission line during a period of high winds. The backup generator supporting phone line communications did not operate as expected, which resulted in the loss of communications when the phone system batteries depleted. Limited communications via commercial phone lines was restored at approximately 1:00 pm. All communications equipment was restored as of 4:30 pm. | |||
