STOLEN PORTABLE GAUGE (Udate)
This is an update to a report received by the NRC on August 3,1998, from the State of Arizona involving a report of a stolen moisture / density gauge. An Arizona licensee reported to the State that a Troxler Model 3430 (Serial No. 22924) was stolen from a mobile home park in Tucson, Arizona. The gauge contains two sealed sources containing 10 millicuries of cesium-137 and 50 millicuries of americium-241. The theft occurred during the evening of July 30,1998, or early moming of July 31,1998.
A representative from the State of Arizona notified the NRC on August 7,1998, that the gauge had been found on August 5,1998, by the Sheriff's Department . The gauge was found covered by a rug along a railroad track near Deming, New Mexico. The gauge was reported to be undamaged. An inspector from New Mexico's Department of the Environment was dispatched to the location to help search for the gauge. Extensive media coverage developed in New Mexico over the stolen gauge. The licensee retumed the gauge to its Tucson's office.
