STOLEN PORTABLE GAUGE (Arizona incident) 1 This provides information concerning an event reported by the State of Arizona involving a stolen moisture / density gauge. Based on information provided by the State, an Arizona j licensee reported that a truck containing a Troxler Model 3430 (Serial No. 22924) l l

moisture / density gauge was stolen from a mobile home park at 1552 North Miracle Mile, Tucson, Arizona. The theft occurred during the evening of July 30,1998, or early moming of i July 31,1998. The gauge was locked in a steel box bolted to the truck bed. The truck is a 1995 Isuzu with Arizona license plate 5BH-379.

1 The gauge contains two sealed sources containing 10 millicuries of cesium-137 and 50 millicuries of americium-241. The Tucson police department was notified and is investigating. The Arizona licensee has posted a $250 reward.

The State of Arizona has notified the states of New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and California. The State of Arizona had also notified Mexico. The State plans to notify the FBI.

l The Arizona licensee has issued a press release.

This information has been confirmed with representatives of the Arizona Radiation Control l Program and is current as of 11:25 a.m. (CDT), Monday, August 3,1998.
