AECM-84/2-0018, October 26, 1984 Per the referenced letter, Mississippi Power & Light Company (MP&L) stated that a final report was expected to be provided by April 12, 1985 for PRD-84/11. The subject potentially reportable deficiency concerned the potential for leaking tantalum capacitors, located internally at the top of the SA-1 relay printed circuit board, to cause corrosion buildup on the circuit board and subsequent relay failure.

The subject potentially reportable deficiency concerned the potential for leaking tantalum capacitors, located internally at the top of the SA-1 relay printed circuit board, to cause corrosion buildup on the circuit board and subsequent relay failure.
MP&L previously determined that this deficiency was not reportable under the provisions of 10CFR21 for GGNS Unit 1. As indicated in the referenced letter a determination as to whether the deficiency is reportable under 10CFR50.55(e) for Unit 2 can not be made until the Unit 2 relays are energized and monitored for two weeks to determine whether they contain leaking capacitors.

Dear Dr. Grace:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 2 Docket No. 50-417 File:

0260/0511/0512 PRD-84/11, Interim Report #1, Westinghouse Type SA-1 Relays AECM-85/2-0008

Reference:

AECM-84/2-0018, October 26, 1984 Per the referenced letter, Mississippi Power & Light Company (MP&L) stated that a final report was expected to be provided by April 12, 1985 for PRD-84/11. The subject potentially reportable deficiency concerned the potential for leaking tantalum capacitors, located internally at the top of the SA-1 relay printed circuit board, to cause corrosion buildup on the circuit board and subsequent relay failure.

In November 1982 construction activities on Grand Gulf Unit 2 were reduced to a minimum. Being in this reduced activity mode has limited the number of inspections that can be done on Unit 2 equipment to determine if the identified situation was or is applicable.

Bechtel has initiated Quality Action Request (QAR) F-464 to track required action to close our investigation of this PRD.

The QAR will remain open until all action is complete, gar 2iBBR "i89h7 gg4 J0P14AECM85040301 - 1 Member Middle South Utilities System 0 0 i
