'SECOND INTERIM REPORP Description of Deficiency During preoperational testing at Sequoyah unit 1, it was discovered that pressure drops existed in excess of that designed for across the Essential Raw Cooling Water System (ERCW) strainera.
S. P. Kinney Engineering in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, supplied these strainers and predicted their pressure drop. 'Ihe actual pressure drop was much larger than the stated value. As a result, reduced flow rates could occur due to increased systen resistance. 'Ihe total system pressure drop for unit 1 has been determined to be acceptable; however, the acceptability of two-unit operation has not yet been established.
Interim Progress The flow rates for several conponents cooled by the ERCWS required for safe shutdown of the plant were not met during preoperational testing. A portion of this flow rate deficiency can be attributed to the excessive pressura drop across che ERCW st.rainers. TVA has reduced the flow requirements of the ERCW syste. as discussed in NCR SQN SWP 8107 (SQRD 328/81-22) As a result, the system should be capable of supporting two-unit operation without replacing the strainers. The flow testing presently in progress should verify the system adequacy. If the ongoing tests do not verify system adequacy, the NRC will be notified before unit 2 fuel load.
