OF THE MAY 7, 2018, PUBLIC MEETING WITH NUSCALE POWER, LLC, REGARDING TOPICAL REPORT-0118-58005, IMPROVEMENTS IN FREQUENCY DOMAIN SOIL-STRUCTURE-FLUID INTERACTION ANALYSIS The purpose of this public teleconference meeting was for NuScale to present to the NRC staff an overview of a methodology that permits the soil-structure-interaction analysis of an integrated model of the structure containing fluid and major components in a one-step computerized analysis. NuScale has proposed the submission of the above methodology in a topical report (TR), entitled, Improvements in Frequency Domain Soil-Structure-Fluid Interaction Analysis.
NuScale plans to submit this TR by the end of May 2018. This meeting included a closed portion to allow the participants to discuss NuScales proprietary information.
NuScale described that the purpose of this TR was to provide an alternate seismic methodology for use by a combined license (COL) applicant or licensee to perform seismic analyses.
NuScale stated that by submitting this topical report they sought NRC approval of the methodology presented in the topical report for generic use, i.e., whether an applicant or licensee references the NuScale design certification or not. NuScale further stated that it is not seeking NRC approval of the representative calculations, inputs, or results that are described in the TR. The NRC staff stated that NRC would, if the topical is accepted for docketing, review the methodology and not any of the software used in demonstration of the methodology.
The NRC staff asked several clarification questions during the meeting and informed NuScale that additional and more in-depth technical interactions are needed to better understand the methodology and its intended purpose and use. The NRC and NuScale staffs agreed to hold a half-day, face-to-face, meeting in the near future to discuss the technical aspects of the methodology in detail. Additionally, NuScale agreed to provide detailed technical information to the NRC staff, including calculations, analyses, case studies, benchmarking, and software input to support the acceptability of the methodology and conclusion of the TR. The date of the next interaction with NuScale on this topic is to be determined.
