On March 12, 2007, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) No. NRR-07-005 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML070660103) regarding dissimilar metal welds in the pressurizer at Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (VEGP), Units 1 and 2. This letter acknowledges receipt of Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc.s (SNC) {{letter dated|date=May 23, 2008|text=letter dated May 23, 2008}} (ADAMS Accession No. ML081480203), informing the NRC that all actions in response to this CAL have been completed at VEGP Unit 1.

SNC {{letter dated|date=April 18, 2008|text=letter dated April 18, 2008}} (ADAMS Accession No. ML081120439), to the NRC stated that during the recent refueling outage for VEGP Unit 1, weld overlays were performed on all primary water stress corrosion cracking susceptible welds connected to the pressurizer. These included applicable welds on the safety nozzles, relief nozzle, surge line nozzle, and the spray line nozzle. Further, non-destructive examination of each of these weld overlays identified no reportable indications. Based on these letters, the NRC has found that all the commitments listed in the CAL and supporting commitment letter (ADAMS Accession No. ML070650572) have been met for VEGP Unit 1. As such, it is no longer necessary to implement enhanced inspection and leakage monitoring requirements for the reactor coolant system. Also, Technical Assignment Control (TAC) No. MD7292 has been closed.

SUBJECT:

VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 - COMPLETION OF ACTIONS FOR CONFIRMATORY ACTION LETTER NRR-07-005 (TAC NO. MD7292)

Dear Mr. Gasser:

On March 12, 2007, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) No. NRR-07-005 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML070660103) regarding dissimilar metal welds in the pressurizer at Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (VEGP), Units 1 and 2. This letter acknowledges receipt of Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc.s (SNC) letter dated May 23, 2008 (ADAMS Accession No. ML081480203), informing the NRC that all actions in response to this CAL have been completed at VEGP Unit 1.

SNC letter dated April 18, 2008 (ADAMS Accession No.

Furthermore, based on these letters and the August 13, 2007, letter from the NRC acknowledging completion of CAL actions at VEGP Unit 2 (ADAMS Accession No. ML072120467), the NRC has found that all the commitments listed in the CAL and supporting commitment letter have been met for both units. No further response is required regarding the CAL. The NRC considers the CAL closed.

Thank you for informing us of the actions documented in your letter. These actions may be examined during a future NRC inspection of your facility.

Current NRC guidance regarding CALs is contained in the NRC Enforcement Policy and the NRC Enforcement Manual, which are available at the NRC web site at http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/enforcement.html (click on Enforcement Policy or Enforcement Guidance) or by contacting the Government Printing Office (GPO) toll-free at

1-888-293-6498. The GPO is open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday (except Federal holidays).

In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations 2.390 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the NRC=s document system (ADAMS), accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm.html.

Sincerely,

/RA/
