Tendon Performance The'following properties were investigated and are reported herein:

TEST PURPOSE:

The purpose of this series was to show that the tendons which will be used in the Crystal River Unit #3 Reactor Containment Building perform adequately under static as well.as dynamic loading.

TEST PROCELURE:

All the tendons and samples tested were 7mm diameter low-relaxation prestressing wire according to ASTM A421-65 with the following minimum physical properties:

The_ entire test program was run in duplicate for wire

.from two different suppliers, namely:

aw Richard Johnson and Nephew Limited - Ambergate, England Shinko Wire, Company, Ltd. - Amagasaki, Japan A. series (FPC-ll) of wire samples with variable button-head parameters was tested in a tensile testing mach-ine.

Prior to testing, the two button-heads on each sample were identified and recorded in regard to their parameters.

The specimens weco loaded up to failure, recor6_.tg breaking load and elongation and location of failure.

The' findings were used to establish proper limits for the button-head parameters and show the re-liability of the anchoring method.

s In the dynamic tests (FPC-1, FPC-2) repreaentative ten-dons containing approximately 10% of the wires of an actual tendon, were subjected to either an average load amplitude _for.several hundred thousand load changes or to a relatively large amplitude for a small number of cycles.

The anchorage properties for each tendon

.were recorded both prior to and after testing.

Tendon tensile tests (FPC-10) were run to demonstrate the satisfactory behavior of a full size tendon under static loading and to show the mode of fe.ilure.

One tendon of each wire type was tested under actual job conditions: 'one end having a shop-installed washer and the other end field-button-headed.

CONCLUSIONS:

Both wire types behaved satisfactorily _under dynamic loading and in the button-head tests.

The Shinko wire fulfilled the acceptance criteria set for the tendon tensile test.

The Johnson wire tendon developed 96.7% of^the required capacity.- For dis-cussion on the Johnson wire test results refer to tendon tensile test FPC-10.2.

Part I and II document that both wire types behave satisfactorily at low temperatures.

TEST PURPOSE:

To demonstrate that the tendon will perform satisfactorily under dynamic loading with average amplitude and long duration.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:

There shall be no failure in wires or button-heads when subjected to 500,000 cycles from 60% to 66% of the minimum guaranteed ultimate strength.

TEST FACILITY:

Fatigue Testing Machine at the Structural Fatigue Research Laboratory Balcones Research Center, The University of Texas, Austin, Texas.

TEST ARRANGEMENT:

Test tendons consisting of 17 wires substituted for the actual 163 wire tendons.

The loading ram was suspended from a pair of heavy I beams.

The tendons, tested in vertical position, beared on the top flanges of these beams.

The top anchorages showed the same build-up as a regular anchorage, namely: bearing plate, shims, stress-ing washer.

After a trial run up to 300,000 cycles with the rig used in Test Series FPC-2, it was obvious that a more rigid and better controlled set-up had to be built.

The two vertical guides were replaced by stiffer profiles and connected to the floor.

The swivel pin connecting the loading yoke to the supporting guide was replaced by a stronger, high strength bar.

Instead of letting the tendon bear directly on the yoke, a pivot was added to h

allow the tendon to remain in perfect vertical position

Riehle-Los Fatigue Testing Machine consisting basically of a loading unit, a pulsator and a console unit.

4 The loading unit is a hydraulic ram with a ball bearing on either end.

The pulsator regulates the flow of oil to and from the loading unit, that is, it takes oil from the cylinder circuit on the up stroke and then forces it back on the down stroke.

.E The console unit houses the indicating and pumping systems in addition to operating controls and much 2 the electrical equipment.

TENDON INSTALLATION:

All ine tendons were shop fabricated. They were inserted into the test rig from the top where they were shimmed against the bearing plate. The pivot-rod was screwed into the bottom washer and se-cured against the saddle with the pin. The ram length was adjusted and the set-up, ram and tendon checked for alignment in vertical direction.

TEST PROCEDURE:

The hardness was measured on all anchor components prior to tendon a s sembling. Four (4) readings per washer and one (1) on each shim and bearing plate were recorded. All button-heads were inspected as to

diameter, splits, cracks or flaws. The eccentricity was checked to be s

s cmaller than 0.010" on random samples during button-heading. The tendons were loaded at tha rate of 25% of the initial load per minute until the initial load was reached, which was held for at least ten minutes before the cycling was started. This initial load corresponded to the upper load limit. The machine was adjusted to the two (2) load limits. Once the machine stabilized, the cycling rate.was increased to approximately 300 cycles per minute and the counter started. The running time per test was 27 - 28 hours3.240741e-4 days <br />0.00778 hours <br />4.62963e-5 weeks <br />1.0654e-5 months <br /> for 500,000 cycles, during which the rate of cycling was checked several times with a stop watch and found to be consistent.

The load limits were set as follows:

After testing, all the wires and button-heads were inspected as to any 4s change that might have occurred during the test.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:

There shall be no failure in wires or button-heads when subjected to a minimum of 50 cycles to the following per-2000 centages of the minimum guaranteed strength of 60 i L+100 TEST FACILITY:

TEST ARRANGEMENT:

The test tendons substituting for the actual tendons consisted of 17 - 7mm diameter wires.

The tendons were tested in vertical position.

The top anchorages bearing on the top flanges of a pair of heavy I beams showed the same build up as a regular anchorage namely: bearing plate, shims, stressing washer.

At the bottom the shims beared directly on the loading yoke.

This joke had a swivel 1

connection.to the supporting column on one side and was

guided on the other side to allow free vertical movement but to prevent any lateral misalignment.

The tendon's ulti-mate capacity shall exceed 2334 kips and the correspond-ing elongation has to be equal to or greater than 2.5%.

TENDON INSTALLATION:

An anchoring block from a previous test was used.

A transition cone was welded to the inside of the trumpet at a distance of 24" from the backside of the bearing pla te.

A 5'5/8" I.D. extension pipe was welded to the back end of the transition cone and the space between l pipe, cone, and trumpet was filled with high strength concrete.

The wires were button-headed on one end and threaded through the first washer, anchoring block and the second washer and then field-button-headed.

-4 The anchoring block-was then moved in place and the tendon pulled through the test stand.

The anchoring end was shimmed with a series of stacked shims with a total length of 13 1/4" and the other end coupled to the' pull rod.

TEST PROCEDURE:

s The tendon was stressed in stages.

The load stages were set at pressure readings mentioned.on pages C-23 through C-2A For each stage, gauge pressure and elongation were read and recorded.

Test FPC-10.1 (Shinko wire) was concluded, when the ram's capacity was reached without breaking any ' ires.

Test FPC-10.2 (Johnson wire) was terminated when it was apparent that elongation was reached without increasing the load.

The tendon capacity was defined as the load corresponding to the highest pressure reading reached.

The resulta were plotted in force-strain curves.

All six breaks were located in the free length of the

. wire-(compare failure locations, page 33), neither in the-anchorage zone nor in the region where the tran-

sition cone touched the wire.

During the button-head tests (FPC-11) 5 wire breaks in f

-113 fell below the minimum requirement of 240,000 psi.

The' mill certificates for this shipment of wire indicated strengths.in excess of 240,000 psi with the lowest test result of-240,800 psi.

It abould be noted that neither the wire used in the button-head' tests (FPC-ll) nor the

-wire used in the-tendon tensile test (FPC-10.2) could be directly related to a specific test number in the mill certificate.

The-two series of tests were intended to j,

cdevelop. representative information for the typical wire

-properties.- The' apparent. discrepancy of the mill certi-

.ficate test results-compared with the tendon tensile test and button-head tests-cannot be. fully resolved on the in-l-

The severity of corrosion was such that the wire would' have been rejected for use in this nuclear' containment' structure.

Anchor Haroness:

The washer material has a Brinell Hardness range of 200 to about 260.

Drillhole Diameter:

The tendon washers are drilled with a "L"-drill, which means a drillhole diameter of 0.290"

(+0. 010 " -0.003").

Prior to this test series on 7mm wire, tests conducted on 1/4" diameter wire showed no measurable influence of the drillhole diameter on the button-head perform-ance, as long as it varied within reasonable limits.

Graph I shows the test results on samples with variable drillhole diameter and a critical button-head configuration, that is, a range of diameter and eccen-tricity where the wire Nveloped "near button-head breaks".

Drillhole Shape:

Prescon uses a straight drillhole based on the experi-ence that the button-head seats itself in the relatively soft material, thereby eliminating tha necessity of counter-sinking the hole.

Most of the samples in graph I had a straight drillhole.

These two are the most critical parameters in regard to the button-head's performance.

Even so, there is generally a relatively wide range for diameter as well as for eccentricity which allows the button-head to develop the full actual strength of the wire.

Splits and Cracks in Button-Heads:

Splits and cracks in button-heads are dependent on the wire material.

Harder wire tends to split easier than the softer, more ductile wire.

The incidence of cracks can not be controlled.

Button-heads which do not have the correct configuration might not develop the actual ultimate strength or elongation of

the basic wire.

Unsatisfactory button-heads show two charac-teristic but distinctive types of failure:

Button-head failure, generally a brittle fracture in the head caused by defects.

Near button-head failure, a ductile fracture close to the button-head often caused by eccentric bearing on the washer.

Whereas " button-head failures" often occur at low breaking

load and small elongation, the "near button-head failures" generally show sufficient strength but do not reach the l

l actual elongation of the wire.

Both failure types are i-premature and can be controlled by correcting the button-

~

head configuration.

A correct button-hwad will develop the actual physical pro-

.perties of the basic wire and the wire will therefore fail at any location along its axis.

To establish the proper button-head configuration.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:

The button-head should develop the minimum guaranteed strength of the wire.

The proper button-head configuration is the one which does not show any predetermined failure location along the wire's axis.

The failure location is not repeatable.

PROCEDURE:

The samples were tested on a tensile testing machine at Trinity Testing Laboratories.

Prior to testing, the two button-heads on each sample are identified and recorded in regard to diameter, eccentricity, and cracks.

The samples were loaded to failure with a constant rate.

A dial indicator which measured the elongation was zeroed at a force reading of 1000 pounds and was read at failure.

The tested samples were labeled and stored.

The test series was run for both types of wire by varying the button-head size, eccentricity and anchor hardness.

Strength-and elongation of all tested samples are plotted in graph IV. All samples with an anchor hardness greater than 200 Brinell - performed satisfactorily. The total of five breaks close to the button-head can be termed " wire failures' as they don't exhibit any reduction in strength nor elongation and show no reproduceability. The samples with an anchor hardness of less than 200 Brinell show a definice trend to develop "near ~ button-head failures", with satisfactory strength but some of them with a slightly reduced elongation. crack length, width and angle for all button-heads on samples with " wire . failures"~are plotted in graph V. The tests covered a wide s range of crack dimensionc. All those cracks shown on the graph did definitely not have any influence on the button-head's performance. None of the "near button-head failures" showed any relationship between crack size or location and failure type. CONCLUSION: For an anchor hardness range 200-320 Brinell, the test-ed button-heads developed the strength and elongation { at failure of the basic wire. The failure location is not repeatable. Cracks in a but. ton-head did not have 1 any bearing on its performance. This roport covers tho fatiguo test results of eight specimens FPC2. Test serios FPC1 vore, four each for FPC1 and long term tests while test serios FPC2 uoro short term dynamic tests. The test setup for both series is described in the report together with the proceduro used. The results are prosonted in a tabular form giving the cyclos for cach specimon. The requirements for FPC1 specimens were 500,000 cyclos from a minimum load of 146.2 to a maximum load of 161.2 kips.. You will notice that all specimons sustained the required cycles. Wo have run the fourth spe-cimen to 889,020 cyclos. Those tondons showed no f ailures anywhere and there is no doubt that they could enduro the stress rango into millions of cyclos. The roquiromonts for FPC2 ucre pulsation from a minimum load of 119 5 to a maximum load of 170 7 kips.- The specimens performod well and no failuro was observed anywhero in any of the tests.
