SUBJECT:

SUMMA 5!Y OF NEETING HELD ON MAY 10, 1977 TO DISCUSS THE MARK II CONTAIhMENT DYNAMIC LOADS PROGRAN A meeting was held on May 10, 1977 between the Mark II owners executive comittee and NRC management.

The purpose of the cieeting was to discus",

the Mark II owner's program for pesolving the dyr.amic loads problem p:ed program schedule.

Tha attendees list and copfes of the slides given to the attendees are enclosed.

The major topics discussdd are as follows:

1.

Program Plan Overview The Mark II owners described an overall program which had been revised to include a bounding loads approach, short tem program (STP), for early plant assessment and a longer tem program (LTP) consisting of confimatory efforts (enclosure 2).

2.

Chugging loads (enclosure 3)

The Japanese scale size tests which the Mark II owners had indicated would be part of their steam loads program (see April 18, 1977 meeting sucriary by S. Miner) has been delayed because of instrtanentation problems and therefore, Japanese infonnation will not be available in a timely fashion.

The Mark II owners are now looking at alternate sites for conducting the scale size multi-vent tests.

They have a team in Gemany investigating the Geman scale size test program.

In addition they are investigatdog sites in the U. S. A., such as at the.

Croare Corporation, for conducting these tests.

M1 still expect that scale size multi-vent tests will-verify that the 4T full size single vent tests have provided the Lounding chugging loads. They do not propose to conduct full size multi-vent test.

The 11 ark II owners have reoriented their chugging loads program into a bounding loads approach for early plant evaluation such as Zimer. This will be followed by a longer tem loads verification program. The bounding loads program, short tenn program (STP), will be based on the test infomation and existing Gennan infomation.

The 11 ark II owners indicated that if arrangements with the Japanese are finalized, any information that may become available from their tests, will be utilized.

Other Loads The Mark II owners provided a brief description of the safety relief valve program.

(Enclosure 4and5)and The ranshead program (enciesure 4) pool swell program (enclosure 6).

has also been reoriented into a short tem program and a long term program.

Schedu14 The following infomation will be submitted in June:

(a) The 4T Bounding Loads Report (b) The EPRI Evaluation Report (c) The Ramshead Short Tem Program (d) The remainder of the flRC Generic Questions (e) Submerged Structure Report Sumary The staff was not convinced that the : hugging loads problem can be bounded with the 4T test results and scale size multi-vent tests. The staff believes that full size multi-vent tests may be required. However, since a detail description of the proposed chugging program and the results of the analytical portion of the program will be presented to the staff on May 18 & 19, 1977 another management meeting will be schedule for June 1,1977, to discuss this matter further.
