Scanner Flask DESCRIPTION:
I' A tappered window, located on the side of the device, allows for insertion of a depleted uranium olug to provide additional shielding during transportation.
The device consists basically of a depleted uranium sphere = 6.25 inches in diameter, weighing approximately 45.5 kilograms, and encased in a stainless steel cylinder.
The depleted uranium plug is replaced with a collimator plug at the time of use.       l The scanner flask is the source holder assembly for the AECL gamma scanning             i system.
The cylinder has a thickness of 0.28 inches.
Steel guide cab 1es are used to hold the scintillation detector on 6ne side of the column :or tower to be scanned and the scanner flask on the side directly opposite the detector. Both the detector and flask are moved up and down the guide cables by a cable connected to synchronized hoist motors. Thus, both units move up and down the column or tower at the same time and location.

Scanner Flask DESCRIPTION:

The device consists basically of a depleted uranium sphere = 6.25 inches in diameter, weighing approximately 45.5 kilograms, and encased in a stainless steel cylinder.

The cylinder has a thickness of 0.28 inches.

The source is held in the device by a removal plug of depleted uranium encapsulated in stainless steel.

The plug can be rotated to move the source from the " safe" critransportation" position to the "open or window" position.

Once positioned, the plug is held ih that position by a stainless steel bolt.

A tappered window, located on the side of the device, allows for insertion of a depleted uranium olug to provide additional shielding during transportation.

The depleted uranium plug is replaced with a collimator plug at the time of use.

l The scanner flask is the source holder assembly for the AECL gamma scanning i

system.

LABELING:

The device is labeled in accordance with Section 20.203,10 CFR 20.

DIAGRAM: is a diagram of a typical site installation. is a diagram of the source housing.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

The device isnused to scan chemical or petroleum columns or towers where gases" and liquids come iin contact. The device is used in ambient environmental conditions and in temperature ranges of -40*C to 50*C.

The device has been used to scan" towers 300 feet above ground level.

PROTOTYPE TESTING.

The Amersham Corporation sealed source Model No. CDC.192 has been tested in accordance with ANSI N542 requirements. The source achieved a classification of 77C6544.

Since this is a custom device, the manufacturer did not test the i

unit.

However, through engineering. analysis, they estimated the ANSI N538 classification of the device to be 24-885-885-23. Additionally, the manufacturer stated that the device had been used in Canada for three years without any report of loss of containment integrity.

During the three years operational peridd, one incident was reported. The cable used to raise and lower the scanner flask broke.

The safety cable lock assembly stopped the fall of the scanner flask within one foot of the break.

This incident did not result any r61 ease of radioactive material nor did the device loss containment integrity.

SUMMARY

The Mod 1 4493-97 scanner flask is a custom device and manufactured by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited for use by their personnel to provide a service to American chemical and petroleum industries.

The sealed source used in the device is manufactured by Amersham Corporation j

and is their Model No. CDC.192.

This source has been in use 'for several years without any reports of loss of containment integrity.

The manufacturer claims that the device has been used in Canada for three years without any report of loss of containment integrity. Additionally, the device is to be i

used by AECL personnel who are trained in the use of the equipment and in radiation safety.

Based on the above considerations and our review of the information and test data contained in the references cited below, we conclude that the ?iodel 4493-97 scanner flask is acceptable for custom licensing to Atomic Energy of Canada Limited.

LIMITATIONS AND/0R OTHER CO$51DERATIONS OF USE:

o This device shall be distributed only to the specific licensee of the NRC, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, o The device shall be leak tested at six month intervals using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcuries of removable contamination, o Handling, storage, use, trar.sfer, and disposal To be determined by the licensing authority.

o This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed or transferred without the written consent of the NRC,
