Supplemental Information Needed for Acceptance of Graphite Materials Qualification Topical Report Date: Wednesday, April 21, 2021 12:14:00 PM
Dear Margaret:
By letter dated December 23, 2020, Kairos Power submitted a topical report on Graphite Materials Qualification for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor (KP-FHR). This topical report describes the testing required to qualify the structural graphite materials used in the safety-related components of the KP-FHR. The purpose of this letter is to provide the results of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs acceptance review of this topical report. The acceptance review was performed to determine if there is sufficient technical information in scope and depth to allow the NRC staff to complete its detailed technical review. The acceptance review is also intended to identify whether the topical report has any readily apparent information insufficiencies in its content that would preclude a thorough and complete technical review by the staff.
The NRC staff has reviewed your report and concluded that the information detailed in the document titled OUO PROP Acceptance Review Discussion Items with Examples 17-Mar-21 transmitted via email with link to NRC Box on March 19, 2021 (Accession Num.
ML21110A712), is necessary to enable the staff to make an assessment regarding the acceptability of the topical report.
As discussed in the closed meeting held on April 12, 2021, Kairos Power intends to revise the topical report to address the information requested in the Acceptance Review Discussion Items, and submit it to the NRC by May 31, 2021. This will enable the NRC staff to begin its detailed technical review.
