August 27      Station in Operational Mode 5 with an approximate system through        temperature of 85F. A nitrogen bubble in the pressurizer August 28      was used to maintain system pressure at 70 PSIG. It was determined one of the Pressurizer safety valves was leaking and would require rework.

J .s DUQUESNE LIGHT COMPANY Bea*ver Valley Power Station NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF MONTHLY OPERATING EXPERIENCE - AUGUST 1980 August 1 Station in Operational Mode 5 with the reactor coolant system through vented to atmosphere and a system. temperature of approximately August 25 90F, The coolant level was being maintained at the elevation of the steam generator loop piping.

August 26 Station in Operational Mode 5 with an approximate system temperature of 85F. The coolant system was pressurized with nitrogen to check for Pressurizer relief valve leaks, first to 30 PSIG, then to 65 PSIG.

August 27 Station in Operational Mode 5 with an approximate system through temperature of 85F. A nitrogen bubble in the pressurizer August 28 was used to maintain system pressure at 70 PSIG. It was determined one of the Pressurizer safety valves was leaking and would require rework.

August 29 Station in Operational Mode 5 with an approximate system temperature of 85F. The reactor coolant system was depressurized and vented to atmosphere. The coolant was drained to the steam generator loop piping level for rework ,f the safety valve and two safety injection system check valves which failed Type "C" Leak testing.

August 29 Station in Operational Mode 5 with an approximate system through temperature of 85F and vented to atmosphere. The coolant August 31 level was maintained at the elevation of the steam generator loop piping.

MAJOR SAFETY RELATED MAINTENANCE - AUGUST 1980 Beaver Valley Power Station is presently shut down for major system modifications required by the Nuclear Regulatory Cocaission. These modifications are performed or in progress during August, 1980.

1. Final inspections of the re-installed Bergen-Patterson large-bore snubbers was in progress.
2. Modifications to the refueling water storage tank were completed.
3. Installation of three chemical addition pumps, which add sodium hydroxide solution to the quench spray during containment depressurization, was completed and the initial testing was performed. Installation of the fourth (and last) pump was in progress.
4. Inspection and modification, en a continual basis as required, of pipe hangers, supports and base plates were in progress.
5. Inspection, internal cleaning and modification of the reactor coolant pump meter thrust runners was completed. The coolant pumps will be operationally tested after the reactor coolant system is pressurized above 400 PSIG.
