On September 24, 2010, the Kansas State University Research Reactor reported an event to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) where circumstances surrounding the removal of an experiment from the reactor pool caused higher than expected dosimeter readings for personnel in the area, and unexpected changes in the restricted area dose rate in excess of 20 rem per hour. Based upon your reporting of the event, the NRC chartered a Special Inspection Team to independently assess your investigation of the causes of the event. Dear Mr. Geuther:
On September 24, 2010, the Kansas State University Research Reactor reported an event to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) where circumstances surrounding the removal of an experiment from the reactor pool caused higher than expected dosimeter readings for personnel in the area, and unexpected changes in the restricted area dose rate in excess of 20 rem per hour. Based upon your reporting of the event, the NRC chartered a Special Inspection Team to independently assess your investigation of the causes of the event. Subsequently, on October 1, 2010, you submitted a 10-day report describing the causes of the event and the corrective actions which you deemed necessary to minimize the possibility of a similar occurrence. Following the review of your report, in a teleconference on October 6, 2010, NRC staff identified needed clarifications to your corrective actions, and on October 7, 2010, you submitted a supplement to your 10 day report.
