Valve packing is used to maintain a seal around the stem of a valve. The packing is installed in the packing chamber between the valve stem and the walls of the packing chamber. Pressure is maintained on the packing by a packing gland. Glands are held in place by bolts/studs that may or not be live loaded (the use of belleville washers to maintain a force in the bolt/force on the gland).
