SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 48 HOURS At about 8:57 a.m., August 30, 1988, Houston Lighting & Power Company (HL&P)                  {
began a shutdown from approximately 45 percent power to repair a main steam vent              ,
line leak at kath Texas Project, Unit 1 (STP-1). HL&P anticipates                             -
approximely 24 hours to reach cold shutdown (Mode 5) condition and an                         l addnional 48 hours to complete repairs and inspections. HL&P discovered the                   l leak coming from a socket weld in a 1-inch main steam vent line associated with               ,
the high point vent of the A steam generator while performing maintenance in the             i reactor containment building during the evening of August 29, 1988. The                      i licensee intends to inspect similar socket welds on main steam and main feed vent lines inside containment during the shutdown.
Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a press release.
