OUTAGE GREATER THAN 2 DAYS On August 25, 1988, at 12:32 p.m. (CDT), the reactor scrammed from 100 percent power. The main generator exciter experienced a brush failure which resulted in a trip of the main turbine. The turbine trip initiated the reactor scram. A fast transfer from the normal to the preferred transformer did not occur on the Division III bus. The Division III (high pressure core spray) emergency diesel generator started and closed onto the bus as expected. Although the reactor vessel water level does not appear to have dropped to the Level 2 (HPCS initiation setpoint), the HPCS pump did start and may have injected briefly.
The licensee declared a NOUE because of the HPCS system injection. The licensee secured from the NOVE event at approximately 1:25 p.m. (CDT). Preferred power has been restored to the Division III bus. Reactor pressure is being controlled by the bypass valves and level maintained utilizing one reactor fuel pump and the startup regulating valve. Reactor shutdown is expected to exceed 72 hours.
