==SUBJECT:==
UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS A reducer section of an extraction steam line running to a feedwater heater ruptured about 12:10 a.m.-(EST) today while Hatch Unit 2 was at 85 percent power, leaving an opening in the 4     pipe about 18 inches long and a quarter-inch wide. Moisture from this low-pressure steam leak is believed to have entered the main generator excitation system, causing a turbine trip and a reactor trip about 12:32 a.m.      All systems functioned normally during the j     shutdown. The steam leak was halted by the closing of the turbine stop and control valves.
No personnel injuries or contamination occurred. Although radiation levels increased above normal operating levels in the turbine building, the releases remained within technical l
sp:cification limits. There was no off-site release in excess of limits.
Georgia Power is continuing to assess both the cause of the event and the extent of the damage. The unit is expected to be out of service for several days. The rupture of this 20-inch-dianeter, non-safety-related steam line is believed to have resulted from erosion /
corrosion of the carbon steel pipe's thin wall.       Equivalent piping will be inspected in
{     Hatch Unit 1, which is shut down for refueling, before that unit restarts.
