Waterford 3 SES Docket No. 50-382 License No NPF-38 Response to Isolation Device RAI for the Diverse Scram System
References:
- 1) NRC RAI Letter, D.L. Wigginton to J.G. Dewease, dated December 20, 1988
- 2) W3P89-0153 dated February 3, 1989 Gentlemen:
By Reference 1, the NRC requested additional information concerning the ATWS Diverse Scram System (DSS) design for Waterford 3.
We indicated in Reference 2 that the remainder of the requested information (regarding isolation devices for the DSS) would be submitted by April 1, 1989.
As you know, the CE Owners Group (CEOG) has been involved with the NRC in cc,ntinuing discussions on the ATWS requirement for a Diverse Emergency Feedwater Actuation System (DEFAS). We expect that the CEOG will shortly I
submit DEFAS design concepts for preliminary review.
It is likely, pending NRC concurrence with the DEFAS conceptual design, that the Waterford 3 DSS design would be affected, rendering current plans for DSS isolation devices inapplicable.

Page 2 W3P89-0087 This situation has been discussed with the Waterford 3 Project Manager.
Based on our discussions it appears reasonable to defer the response to DSS isolation device questions to a schedule consistent with resolution of the generic DEFAS design.
Very truly yours, 4
