Subject:
Waterford 3 SES Docket No. 50-382 License No. NPF-38 NRC Generic Letter 88-05 This reply to the subject Generic Letter provides the schedule requested for implementing a program consisting of systematic measures to ensure that boric acid corrosion does not lead to abnormal leakage, rapidly propagating failure, or gross rupture of the reactor coolant pressure boundary.
Waterford 3 has conducted an evaluation of safety class 1 systems to determine which carbon or low alloy steel components are potentially susceptible to boric acid corrosion and whose failure could affect the integrity of the reactor coolant pressure boundary.
System walkdowns during the second refueling outage were performed to assist ia the identification of these components.
No visual evidence of past leakage or boric acid attack was discovered. Utilizing this information, we are developing a program to procedurally identify, evaluate, control and prevent boric acid corrosion so that the integrity of the reactor coolant pressure boundary is ensured.
This program will be implemented by December 31, 1988.
This response is submitted as requested under affidavit, as specified in 10CFR50.54(f).
Should you require additional information, please feel free to contact me or Larry Laughlin at (504) 464-3499.
Very truly yours, j.
